Every device that connects to the internet uses something called an IP address — like a street address for where your internet traffic should go. But not all IP addresses work the same way.

Here’s what you need to know:

CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT)

DayStarr places most residential and standard business customers behind CGNAT by default.

CGNAT means your internet connection shares a public IP address with others. Your individual device still has a private IP, and the system keeps track of what belongs to you.

  • Helps conserve limited IPv4 addresses

  • Works perfectly for streaming, browsing, video calls, gaming, and most normal usage

  • Does not allow incoming connections (like remote access or hosting)

  • While CGNAT prevents traditional port forwarding, there are effective workarounds that can help you achieve remote access. If you’re unsure which solution is best for your needs, feel free to contact our support team, or take a look at the CGNAT Port Forwarding workaround page.

 Public IP Address

A Public IP is a unique address visible on the open internet. It allows two-way communication — meaning other devices can reach you directly.

  • Can be requested if your setup needs it but does come with a small monthly fee.

  • Still typically dynamic (can change over time)

Static IP Address

A Static IP is a public IP that never changes.

You may need this if:

  • You’re hosting a server, camera system, or remote desktop system

  • You have a business setup that needs a consistent address for security or connectivity reasons

  • DayStarr offers Static IPs for an additional fee — contact us to get set up.
