Slow Speeds

How to Run a Speed Test

Running a speed test helps you see how fast your internet is working at any given moment. It shows:

  • Download Speed: How fast data comes to your device (streaming, browsing, etc.)

  • Upload Speed: How fast data leaves your device (sending emails, uploading photos)

  • Ping (Latency): How quickly your device gets a response from the internet

Why Your Speed Test May Vary: Wi-Fi vs Ethernet

The device you use — and how it connects to the internet — can make a big difference in your results.

Wi-Fi (Wireless Signal From Router)

  • Signal can be affected by walls, floors, and distance from your router

  • Other devices (phones, TVs, tablets) may slow it down

  • Can be slightly slower or less consistent

Ethernet (Hardwired)

  • Directly connects your device to the router using an ethernet cable. Make sure you plug in to the LAN port of the router.

  • Offers the most stable and reliable speeds

  • Best option for testing your full internet speed

A Simple Way to Think About It

Imagine your internet connection is like water:

  • Hardwired = Faucet – full pressure, direct flow

  • Wi-Fi = Sprinkler – it works great, but trees, fences, or distance can slow things down and in some cases, block things.

If your Wi-Fi speed test seems slower than expected, don’t worry — it might just be the signal having to travel farther or through obstacles in your home.
